The Mediterranean has genuine yarn shops — Italian filati stores, Spanish mercerÃas, Greek yarn shops, French laines. The challenge is logistics: many of the best shops are not walkable from the cruise terminal. Barcelona and Athens have the closest yarn to the pier; Florence and Rome require a planned excursion or a taxi. Plan your day around the transfer time, not just the shop distance.
Italian yarn shops (filati) are among the best in the world for quality and price. Look for Italian merino, cashmere blends, and silk — often cheaper than the same brands at home. Weight labels may use UK names (4-ply, DK, Aran) or US names. Naples, Rome, and Florence all have yarn shopping, but Florence (Campolmi Filati) is the strongest single-stop yarn shop in the region.
Barcelona has the most concentrated yarn shopping of any Mediterranean cruise port. All You Knit Is Love and Lalanalu are both yarn-first shops reachable by shuttle or taxi from the Moll Adossat cruise piers. Allow 3–4 hours for the round trip including shopping time. Barcelona yarn shops carry both international brands and Spanish merino — a real shore-day destination for knitters.
Rome (Civitavecchia) and Florence (Livorno) are both 90+ minutes from the cruise port to the city center. If your shore day is under 10 hours, skip the yarn run and save it for a land trip. The transfer time and traffic risk eat most of the day. Barcelona, Athens, Marseille, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife all have yarn shopping that works within a standard cruise call.
