What to Knit on a Cruise (and What to Leave at Home)
The best cruise knitting projects are portable, don't require a chart, and use yarn you can buy at ports. Here's how to plan.
A cruise is one of the best knitting environments in the world โ sea days give you hours of uninterrupted project time, and port days let you buy yarn to add to your work. But the wrong project can make you miserable. Here's how to choose.
The ideal cruise project
- Small and portable โ hats, socks, cowls, mittens
- No complex charts โ you'll be on a deck chair, not a desk
- In a weight you can buy at ports โ worsted or DK is the sweet spot
- Something you can put down and pick up โ port days interrupt you
- A pattern you've already started โ don't cast on something new on the ship
Best projects by cruise region
### Alaska
Socks or a hat. Alaska shops carry hand-dyed sock yarn and local wool โ buy a skein at each port and add it to a pair of socks or a colorwork hat.
### Northern Europe / British Isles
A lopapeysa sweater (Iceland), a Fair Isle vest (Shetland), or a yoke sweater (Norway). Buy the yarn at the source and knit it on the ship between ports.
### Mediterranean
A lightweight shawl or wrap in cotton, linen, or silk. Mediterranean yarn shops carry lighter-weight yarn than Northern Europe.
### Caribbean
A crochet project in cotton thread โ a market bag, a beach cover-up, or a doily. Caribbean fiber shopping is crochet-friendly, not knitting-friendly.
What to leave at home
- Lace projects with charts โ the wind and sun on deck make chart reading miserable
- Large sweaters in fine yarn โ you won't finish them and they take up cabin space
- Anything requiring a blocking mat โ you can't block on a cruise ship
- Expensive needles you'd be upset to lose โ things go missing on ships
How much yarn to bring vs. buy
Bring enough yarn for 2โ3 sea days of knitting. Then plan to buy at ports. The joy of cruise knitting is adding souvenir yarn to a project as you go โ a hat that started in Alaska and got a contrast band from Icelandic lopi is a better souvenir than anything you can buy.
