Shetland Wool: A Shore-Day Guide for Cruisers
Jamieson's, Jamieson & Smith, Jumper Weight, and what to buy in Lerwick on a cruise call.
Lerwick is one of the best yarn-buying ports in the world โ two genuine wool brokers, walkable from the pier, selling Shetland heritage yarn directly from the islands' sheep farms. Here's how to make the most of a Shetland shore day.
The two shops
### Jamieson's
Jamieson's is the oldest Shetland yarn brand, family-run since 1890. Their shop is on the Commercial Street in central Lerwick, a 5-minute walk from the cruise pier. They sell their own Shetland heritage yarn in a huge range of natural and dyed colors.
### Jamieson & Smith
Jamieson & Smith (J&S) is the other wool broker โ also on Commercial Street, a few doors from Jamieson's. J&S buys from Shetland wool growers and sells the classic "Jumper Weight" fingering yarn that's used for Fair Isle knitting. Their selection is different from Jamieson's and both are worth visiting.
What to buy
- Jumper Weight โ the classic Shetland fingering yarn, perfect for Fair Isle
- Aran Weight โ for heavier garments
- Cobweb yarn โ lace weight for Shetland lace shawls
- Patterns โ both shops sell pattern leaflets for traditional Shetland garments
How much to buy
For a Fair Isle vest, buy 5โ8 balls of Jumper Weight in different colors โ a main color plus 3โ5 contrast colors. For a full Fair Isle sweater, you'll need 15โ20 balls. The natural (undyed) colors are the most authentic.
Shore-day timing
Lerwick is small โ the entire town is walkable from the cruise pier. Both shops are within 5 minutes of each other. Budget 1 hour per shop, plus time to browse the finished handknits and the Shetland Textile Museum if it's open.
What makes Shetland wool special
Shetland sheep produce a uniquely soft, fine wool that's warm without being heavy. The traditional Shetland knitting techniques โ Fair Isle colorwork, Shetland lace, and fine-gauge garments โ evolved around this specific wool. Buying it at the source means you're getting the genuine article, not a commercial blend.
